Linux pulseaudio S/PDIF surround setup on Intense PC?

Post by dholroyd »

Does anyone have pulseaudio working with a (5.1) surround setup?

I have a logitec Z-5500 5.1 speaker setup which I had wired up with the previous PC using an optical cable.

With the same speaker system plugged in to the Intense PC now via the coax cable, sound is coming out of the wrong speakers. With "Digital Stereo (IEC958)" selected in pavucontrol, the right channel plays from the front-left speaker, and the left channel plays from the rear-left speaker.

It would be obvious to conclude that I have the speakers wired incorrectly, however,
  • the speakers did not behave this way with the last PC, and haven't been rewired
  • the 'test' button on the speaker control unit plays sound via each channel in turn, and shows that the speaker connections are correct
Any ideas?

Tried just testing alsa, to see if pulseaudio is maybe confusing things, but the result is the same.

I tried to get pulseaudio out of the picture with,
echo "autospawn=no" > .pulse/client.conf

pulseaudio --kill
I then tried speaker-test -t wav -c2,
speaker-test 1.0.25

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2048 to 8192
Period size range from 1024 to 1024
Using max buffer size 8192
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 1024
was set buffer_size = 8192
0 - Front Left <-- this played from the rear-left speaker
1 - Front Right <-- this played from the front-left speaker
...

Tried plugging another device into the analog-in of the speaker system and have the same problem with channels, so nothing to do with the PC after all!

Bah.

Hi

I have a very similar setup (Intense PC / Ubuntu 12.10 / 3.5.0-27-generic) but I can't make the S/PDIF output anything. I can select it in pavucontrol ("Digital Stereo (IEC958)") but nothing seems to reach my DAC. It may come from the DAC (I previously used the optical input and not the coaxial one) but I don't think so.

I also tried to use to the analog output (using a standard headphone jack) and I don't hear anything too.

The HDMI audio is working (but my audio system does not use HDMI...).

Did you do anything special to have the S/PDIF output working on Ubuntu 12.10? Did it work like this straight out of the box? Any special configuration file?

Thank you,

With xubuntu 12.10, SPDIF just worked. When I upgraded to 13.04, it died. Analog audio still works, though.
