[Solved] BIOS and noise

I am using a fit-PC3 low power as an audio server. Everything works fine but there is a major problem: as reported in http://www.fit-pc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=80&t=5212, the device (not the hard disk which is a SSD) is noisy.

My BIOS is version BZ_2.1.0.333_7. The current version is SBC 2.1.0.333_13.

The BIOS changelog on http://fit-pc.com/wiki/index.php/Fit-PC3_BIOS_ROM_Files suggests that with SCT_2.1.0.333_8 "Aggressive CPU power management (CPU noise reduction) is implemented".

My question is: is there a realistic chance that I can get rid of the noise (or maybe just reduce the noise level) by upgrading the BIOS ?

It is long ago I updated the BIOS on my my fitpc3, but after doing so and turning
the aggressive power saving off, I could no longer hear the noise. Note that it also makes the device use more power.

Thanks jens, do you remember exactly which option in which menu did you turn off ?

My understanding is that upgrading from SCT_2.1.0.333_7 to SCT_2.1.0.333_8 would allow enabling aggressive power management. If there is a way to disable (aggressive) power management without upgrading the BIOS I would first try it.

B.t.w., do you know if there is a way to save the current BIOS for re-installation (e.g., in case an upgrade brings more problems than it actually solves) ?

I have upgraded the BIOS following http://www.fit-pc.com/wiki/index.php/Fi ... IOS_Update. The update was succesful. In the new BIOS aggressive power management is disabled by default. The ticking noise is gone (enabling aggressive power management brings the noise back).

This option in the BIOS was added exactly to solve the noise issue. Sorry, no, I do not know to save the old BIOS, but as far as I have noticed the new BIOS works just fine.
