Hi
I am thinking of buying this Ft-PC2 for Ubuntu server 8.04 LTS to be used as a Home Server - 24/7 but I need to find out from the forum people here what are your experiences for a setup like mine/below.
- 24/7 setup
- OS - Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS
- Other Application servers that is needed are;
- Apache2 - to host my personal web pages (with photos etc)
- Postfix+Dovecot+spamassassin+clamav+amavisd+squirrelmail - Email setup
- Samba - file server
- CUPS - print server
- OpenVPN - for remote access
- vsftp - FTP server
When I am thinking of performance, I mean this setup is for only 2-5 users only - home setup but I am thinking whether I get a reasonable response. At the moment, I am using a Pentium III with a 20GB normal PATA disk & I am very happy with the performance, apart from the fan, HDD noice & power consumption. But for my future one, I am looking for no nose (no fan) & low power while with a reasonable response.
By the way, I am asking your experience, mainly I have not used a Atom based PC.
So I would like to hear from people you have similar setup & their experiences.
Mathew
Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS on Fit-PC2
Re: Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS on Fit-PC2
I built several server on my fit-PC, Ubuntu 8.04 server, Ubuntu 9.04 server, Windows 2003 server, Windows 2008 server and Debian Server. The fit-PC2 works very well in all case and it'is enough powerfull to support 5 users. For installation of server distribution, it's easier to use an external CD-Rom reader. (Lots of issue with USB key)
When you choose the hard drive you'll put into your fit-PC2, don't choose a noisy one (I bought a 500go that is a little bit noisy compare to the one I have in my macbook pro, so it means there are no noise hard drive, I mean non SSD).
For the power consuption, you can't find better.
I also use the nomachine software that use lots of ressource, if you want to built a shell only system (SSH), you can buy directly the fit-PC2.

Re: Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS on Fit-PC2
For server stuffs, everything works like a charm on my fit-PC2s.
The only point is the bad Video-3D management of the poulsbo chipset.
But you definitely don't need 3D for a server use ...

==> The standard noiseless fit-PC2 160GB should be ok ?I bought a 500go that is a little bit noisy

Hi
Thank you both of your replies.
Can I know whether with 160GB HD it is really quite?
Does anyone know what is the model of this 160GB HD?
Note that although I said my server file server, it is not the main storage so I am not that keen on storage but rather "no-noise" tiny PC.

Re: Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS on Fit-PC2
My fit-PC2s hardrives are really silent.
Nevertheless there isn't a lot of traffic on my servers.
Since these hardrives are only 5400RPM 2.5'' HDDs, I guess the noise is the same than on laptops/notebooks for instance.
I read that Compulab ship with 160GB Seagate or Samsung : http://www.fit-pc2.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=2
I also read about SSD drives (not included) that are totally mute here : http://www.fit-pc2.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=27
My HDDs specs are the following :
