Standby is a standard mode where most PC is powered-off but memory is still powered so the PC can resume quickly without reloading the OS.
OS support for standby is accessible in the shut-down menu and in power-saving dialogs.

Does the 6-8W (depending on CPU usage) figure include the hard drive?

Yes. But it does not include about 20% waste in the external power supply.

What is the power consumption of the FitPC2 diskless (and/or, what is the consumption of the disk you are using)?
