Haiku ( formerly BeOS )

Post by doru »

Anybody was try Haiku with Fit-PC2 ?

More time ago I tried BeOS with my old PC - an AMD 350Mh with 128 Mb RAM and 64 video RAM on my GeForce 2 videocard.

I was surprised when I opened eight video and ten - twelve audio files and my PC run without stumble !

The same system frozen in windows when I opened 2 - 3 video files.

That was in 2002 if I remember wright.

Of course meantime all was changed, codecs, hardware, etc., but idea is the Haiku is a fresh OS based on BeOS and is possible to have very good results together with Fit-PC2 on multimedia applications.

If anybody will try please give us some impressions about...

thanks

By the way

Haiku OS is available like a live CD, isn't necessary to install on HD, SSD;
just run from CD.

Anybody can try, please?

Just download an image from here, put on USB stick and then boot from USB; after the OS is load just run a movie from your HD.

The main problem with Haiku is the lack of software packages.
What will you use it for?
Even ReactOS is better (when it finally works) since it supports everything that Windows XP supports.

Not really; most software developed for BeOS running in Haiku.

In BeBits website (http://www.bebits.com/) are a lot of applications and Haiku is just released in september. More application will be come.

Also are some application developed for Zeta-OS which was a commercial stopped project derived from BeOS.

I have intention to use for multimedia due to very low resources necessary.

Thanks for ReactOS suggestion, I will try.

I asked that question because it seems that if I want to sell a solution based on Fit-PC2, then I will need to develop the software myself if I am using BeOS / Haiku. This is different from using Linux / Windows where almost everything is readily available.

But I am willing to try Haiku anyway when I have some spare time.

Hi,

I put Haiku onto a 2GB usb stick and it started really fast, seems nice on a C1100.
The poblem is, I cannot use my USB keyboard/mouse.

What if you contact Haiku developers to ask them, how to use it with usb keyboard/mouse?

Anyway, I like it, really elegant and fast.

Cheers,
István

Hello István

Thanks for yours time !

Seems Haiku have some problem, not just on Fit-PC, but with keyboard and mouse connected through USB:
1.
http://www.haiku-os.org/get-haiku/release-notes / Missing Features - the last but one bullet
USB keyboards attached to OHCI or to USB 2.0 hubs do not work in Kernel Debugging Land (KDL). They need to be connected to UHCI root ports to work in KDL. Also note that when entering the kernel debugger by means of a panic it is possible that the keyboard does not work. To work around this issue you can manually enter the kernel debugger once and leave it again to enable the USB keyboard.
and
2.
http://www.haiku-os.org/community/forum ... _and_mouse

Fortunately I think is a solvable problem, at first view about that subject in haiku forum.

Please give me some time, 2-3 days, for more documentation and I will put here more about that.

Meantime you can try to disable Legacy USB support in the BIOS setup ?

Bellow quote is from second link ( 2. ) put above.

Having dealt with similar problems with USB mice on multiple systems I have found that everything works if you disable Legacy USB suport in the CMOS BIOS setup.
thanks for your time

Hi,

I got mouse/keyboard work :)

I put an USB hub into the fit-pc2 (in the back panel) and I put my wireless receiver into the hub.
With this trick (I read it in the opensolaris thread) the keyboard and mouse are working well.

Anyway, I do not know Haiku, so, I did not succeed to setup the network.
I use Haiku on a 2GB pendrive.
I spent about 10 minutes until now, I have limited time, sorry :)

Any hint are welcome.

Cheers,
István

Thanks István !!

Just if you have another little time you can run some video files stored on your hard-disk with any Haiku player, please ?

I remember the predecessor, BeOS, was very impressive related to multimedia - can run eight movies simultaneous without problem, and I hope Haiku have that legacy.

thanks for your time
