I noticed when I set up my Mint box that the preinstalled Mint 18.0 and swap take up all of the SSD's capacity. I provided unused space on all of my SSD's for over provisioning, but the Mint box is my first computer with an mSATA SSD.
Does mSATA no longer benefit from over provisioning? In any event, I used GPARTED to shrink / * and move swap to leave some of the drive unused.
* The preinstalled Linux Mint 18.0 is entirely within /. I prefer to make separate partitions for /, home and var.
Updating the preinstalled Mint 18.0 to 18.3 was straightforward and uneventful.

Over provisioning Is already done by SSD manufacturer, some percentage of the total drive capacity is reserved during firmware programming for OP.
Compulab does not allocate space for OP during installation.
