New Pro4 Barebones, will not boot.

Post by greydmiyu »

I recently purchased a fit-PC4 Pro Barebones from Amazon. To round it out I purchase a 1Tb HDD and 8Gb of RAM from NewEgg. Here are those parts:

HDD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822236600

RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820313237

The plan is to install KUbuntu onto the box. Installation of the RAM and the HDD were trivial, surprisingly so. After buttoning it up I plugged it in and used the HDMI1 -> DVI converter for video. Using the same DVI cable as my desktop, same USB keyboard and mouse as my desktop, I tried powering it on.

Nothing. No display. The front panel went from a dark amber to flashing an alternate light amber/green.

Checking the FAQ here I saw mention that RAM in one slot might cause the machine to not boot and to try the other. I had installed the RAM on the outer slot but swapped it to the inner just in case. This time I left the HDD unplugged and the bay door open in case I needed to fiddle around with the inside some more.

Nothing. No display. The front panel this time went from a dark amber to a lighter green, no alternating. Plugging in the HDD did not alter this behavior.

Without sound or display I am stumped as to where to go next. Is it an incompatibility with the RAM I purchased? I saw that ECC is not supported and according to all sources I can find the SIMM I've bought does not have ECC. Any further steps I can take?

Also, other things I noted:
My keyboard does not light up when plugged in. The HUB that hosts my mouse does. This is regardless of which USB port I use. Swapping the video from HDMI1 to HDMI2 did not change anything. Both ports show no display. My monitor is 1920x1080 whereas the output of the video is 1920x1200(?). Would this be a factor?

1. Please follow basic troubleshooting steps: http://www.fit-pc.com/wiki/index.php/Fi ... leshooting
2. What about the speed of your storage drive? If it is 7200 rpm it may overload the system. Try to boot without it. Can you enter the BIOS?
3. In case of single RAM SO-DIMM please install it in the correct slot as described on troubleshooting page.
4. RMA: http://www.fit-pc.com/web/support/rma/

Did the BIOS reset, placed SIMM in slot nearest the edge of the case, no change. Can you confirm that the slot I am using is the outside? The referenced page calls it P7 but there is no marking on the board to indicate which is P6 and which is P7. I am presuming "outside" means "nearest the edge of the case" as that is the outer edge of the board.

WD does not state what "Intellipower" is, but the drive benchmarks well below 7200RPM and far closer to 5600RPM so my presumption is that it is closer to the latter. I have tried booting without it, nothing comes up on the screen. I cannot enter BIOS. The none of the USB slots power my keyboard, even if I use a USB HUB with external power. Also without video I have no indication on when to try to enter BIOS nor how to do so.

The only indication I have is from the front panel FITPC4 light. Power supply in, dark amber. I turn on power and this time with the SIMM in the slot nearest the case and no HDD it turns a solid green. No video from either HDMI port. In fact my monitor reports no signal at all.

True, P7 is the outside slot.
Please remove the storage completely and try enter the BIOS.
If works, I would suggest try another disk 5400rpm.
In case it is DOA and none of the troubleshooting steps helps, please consider RMA:
