Stereo out connected to rear speakers?

Spent some time fighting with my Fit-PC2 trying to get the audio working on Win7. Using the drivers from the forum and according to the windows audio mixer sound is being produced but nothing on any speaker or headphones until I tried the 5.1 configuration test and the test signal for the rear speakers was audible. Confirmed this by playing stereo content with shadowing enabled (produces a synthetic rear speaker signal).
It seems like the stereo out is connected to the rear speaker output from the sound chip... is this just me having done something wrong or is this something physically wrong with the device?
